What Decides How Long the Crossing Takes

The Fastest Routes, and Why They’re Fast

Brindisi–Igoumenitsa wins on pure geography: the Otranto Channel is the narrowest stretch of the Adriatic, so even a modest cruising speed gets you across in roughly 8 hours. Bari–Igoumenitsa is close behind at 8–10 hours, sailing from a port slightly further north but still well south of Ancona.

Among the Igoumenitsa-bound sailings, direct matters more than distance. Superfast’s ~16.5-hour Ancona–Igoumenitsa crossing is roughly in the same range as Bari–Patras (~15.5–16.5 hours) despite covering more sea miles, simply because it doesn’t stop anywhere along the way. Grimaldi’s Ancona–Igoumenitsa service, by contrast, takes 21–22 hours for the identical two ports – because that sailing is built around freight schedules rather than the fastest passenger connection. Overnight Crossings and Check-In Buffers

Most Italy–Greece sailings are timed to put you to sleep on the sea rather than in a hotel. On the 8–10-hour Bari and Brindisi routes, an evening departure around 19:00–23:00 gets you into Greece between roughly 05:00 and 09:00 the next morning – a genuine overnight hop that a reclining seat can handle comfortably. On the long-haul Ancona and Venice routes to Patras, the ship leaves in the afternoon or evening and doesn’t arrive until well into the following day, sometimes the day after that on the Venice run, so a cabin becomes less of a luxury and more of a practical need.

How early you need to be at the terminal depends on which company you’ve booked. Grimaldi Lines applies a flat rule for Schengen-area sailings, including Greece: check in no later than 2 hours before departure, with or without a vehicle. Minoan Lines asks the same, at least 2 hours ahead for its international routes. Ventouris Ferries wants foot passengers 2 hours early and recommends 3 hours for campers, trailers or other large vehicles, with the check-in desk closing 1 hour before sailing. What Can Push the Schedule Back

Timetables on this page are the operators’ own published schedules, and most sailings run close to them. What moves a crossing off-schedule is mostly weather – a stretch of strong Bora wind in the northern Adriatic, or rough conditions in the Ionian Sea near Corfu, can hold a departure at the dock or slow a ship en route, and this is more common in the autumn and winter months than in summer. The other factor is knock-on timing on routes with an intermediate stop: if loading at Igoumenitsa runs long on an Ancona–Patras sailing, everyone continuing to Patras arrives later too, even though nothing went wrong at either individual port.
