Bari is the clear choice for travellers who are already in southern Italy and do not want to drive back north to Ancona. The Adriatic city of Bari – capital of the Puglia region – handles a large share of Italy–Greece ferry traffic, and its routes are particularly attractive for their value for money. Because the crossing to Igoumenitsa is shorter (8–10 hours versus 20–21 from Ancona), fares are generally lower for comparable ticket types. You depart in the evening, cross overnight and arrive in northwest Greece the following morning – efficient, affordable and straightforward.

Bari is also a wonderful city in its own right. The old town (Bari Vecchia) with its Norman cathedral and winding alleyways is well worth an afternoon's exploration before your evening departure. You can park near the port, walk into the old town for dinner, and return for check-in without any rush.

Terminal & Location

The passenger ferry terminal in Bari is the Nuova Darsena (New Harbour), located just east of the city centre at the southern end of the port area. It is a modern terminal with ticket offices, waiting lounges, duty-free shops and a café. The vehicle marshalling area outside can accommodate cars, campervans and trucks.

By road, take the A14 motorway to the Bari Nord or Bari Centrale exit, then follow signs for "Porto" and "Nuova Darsena". The terminal is about 10–15 minutes from the motorway. If you are approaching from the south along the SS16 coastal road, the port entrance is well signposted.

Bari Centrale railway station is roughly 1.5 km from the terminal – walkable with a trolley bag, or a short taxi ride. There is also a local bus connection. If you are a foot passenger arriving by train from Naples, Rome or Bologna, this is the most convenient connection.

Bari operates along similar lines to other major Italian ferry terminals, but the shorter crossing means timing is a bit tighter:

• Vehicle passengers: check-in typically opens 3 hours before departure. Most Bari sailings depart between 21:00 and 23:00, so check-in opens from around 18:00. Aim to arrive no later than 1.5–2 hours before departure – the terminal closes to vehicles 90 minutes to 2 hours prior.
• Foot passengers: check-in opens 2 hours before departure; you can generally arrive 1 hour before without problems outside peak season.

Bari handles motorhomes and larger vehicles without difficulty, though the Nuova Darsena is a somewhat more compact terminal than Ancona's Stazione Marittima. Vehicle lanes are clearly marked, and staff direct motorhomes to the appropriate deck section. Some sailings from Bari offer a camping-on-board option, but it is less universally available than on the longer Ancona routes – on an 8–10-hour overnight crossing, many campervan travellers simply book a cabin and leave the vehicle on the car deck unsupervised, which is standard practice.

Bari connects well with the rest of southern Italy.
