Igoumenitsa is often overlooked in favour of Patras, but it is the smarter choice for a significant share of travellers. If northwest Greece is your destination – the dramatic Zagori villages, the Vikos Gorge, the lake city of Ioannina, Meteora's rock monasteries or the long drive east to Thessaloniki – Igoumenitsa puts you exactly where you need to be, without a four-hour detour south to Patras and back.

It is also the port with the shortest Italy–Greece crossings: from Bari or Brindisi, you are in Greece in 8–10 hours. Even from Ancona, you arrive at Igoumenitsa after just 15 hours, well before the same ship reaches Patras. And if Corfu is on your itinerary, the island ferry departs from a terminal just metres from where your Italian ferry docks.

Terminal & Location

Igoumenitsa has two port areas, which causes occasional confusion:

• New Port (Neos Limenas): on the south side of the bay, this is the international terminal used by long-distance ferries arriving from Italy. Modern, efficient and purpose-built for large ro-pax vessels. This is where you disembark.
• Old Port (Palaios Limenas): closer to the city centre, this is primarily used by short-haul ferries to Corfu. If you want to continue to Corfu after arriving from Italy, you may need to drive or walk a few hundred metres between the two terminal areas – they are practically adjacent.

The New Port is directly accessible from the main road approaching from the north. A new ring road connects the port to the Egnatia Odos motorway interchange east of the city, giving you fast access to the national motorway network almost immediately after leaving the ferry.

One of Igoumenitsa's great advantages is its role as the gateway to Corfu. The island lies just 45 km offshore, and ferries cross multiple times daily. The journey takes roughly 90 minutes to Corfu Town (Kerkyra) on the fast ferries, or a little longer on the larger ro-pax boats. Companies including Ionian Ferries and Endeavor Lines operate this route year-round.

This means you can arrive in Igoumenitsa from Italy with your car, drive straight onto a Corfu ferry without needing a separate booking in advance for the Italian leg, and be on the island by late morning. It is one of the most efficient ways to reach Corfu with a vehicle – and far simpler than flying and renting a car on the island.

Onward Travel from Igoumenitsa

Igoumenitsa is the western terminus of the Egnatia Odos (Via Egnatia) – a modern motorway that crosses northern Greece from west to east, eventually reaching the Turkish border. This makes it one of Greece's most strategically positioned ports for onward road travel:

• Ioannina (~90 km, ~1 h east): the beautiful lakeside city of Ioannina is a rewarding first stop. Its medieval castle, Byzantine museum and Ali Pasha history make it one of the most interesting inland cities in Greece. The surrounding Zagori region, with its stone bridges and gorge walks, is exceptional.
• Meteora (~270 km, ~3–3.5 h): take the Egnatia Odos east, then turn south via Kalambaka to reach the extraordinary rock monasteries of Meteora. Six monasteries perched on towering sandstone columns – one of Greece's UNESCO World Heritage Sites and unmissable.
• Thessaloniki (~470 km, ~4–4.5 h): the Egnatia Odos runs all the way to Greece's second city, where it meets the Via Egnatia ancient road. Thessaloniki has a rich Byzantine heritage, outstanding food and is the base for exploring Mount Olympus and Halkidiki.
• Athens (~470 km, ~4.5–5 h): head east on Egnatia Odos then south on the E65 through Trikala and Lamia. It is a longer drive than from Patras but very doable in a day. Many travellers stop overnight in Ioannina or Meteora on the way.
• Corfu (ferry, ~90 min): as described above, right next door.

The Epirus Region

Igoumenitsa is the capital of the Thesprotia regional unit and the main port of the Epirus region – arguably one of the least discovered corners of mainland Greece and all the better for it.
